Once upon a time, the mountain deity Oho-yama had two daughters: Iwa (Rock) and Saku (Blooming). One day, the heavenly deity Ninigi descended to marry one of them. He chose the younger Saku, calling Iwa ugly and sending her back to her father. Angry, Oho-yama declared that Iwa's descendants would have lives as solid and eternal as rocks. But Saku's descendants, from emperors to common people, would have lives as short and beautiful as spring blooms. When Saku died, a beautiful tree grew on her grave, named sakura.
